And I did avoid the McDonalds on Oxford Street at dinner time and eat at a
nice deli just off Oxford Street. I could not afford to eat in The London
Edition - they charge £36 for a Bacardi and coke

Well the job in Lambeth last year was for a rich Russian model. She needed
to eat a mixed grill IMHO. She was far too thin to be healthy. And Lambeth
is more expensive than the West End for us workers wanting to eat out.

money. I told him that I had not ordered anything. He was East European
and did not have much English but insisted it was our number.

a nice deli just off Oxford Street. I could not afford to eat in The
London Edition - they charge £36 for a Bacardi and coke

There are some quite good restaurants in little side streets
particularly off the Strand.
We often went to the Stockpot in Old Compton Street or the other one
that was opposite the Comedy Theater (now The Harold Pinter Theater)

Well, since you ask, last night it was a very nice rump steak, first for a
long time, local and bought from the Totnes Food market and BBQd. Mashed
potato & swede to accompany - what my mother used to call "potch" - no idea
why, ideas appreciated - with sliced white cabbage and mushrooms and
quartered tomatos in butter shown a frying pan for a very short time. Plain
yogurt to follow (I had a bit of quince preserve in mine).

Tonight we have friends coming to share our bubbletub and they are bringing
the main course. I'm doing the pud and she has said that he would feel very
loved if somebody took the trouble to do a pie for him using dairy-free
pastry so I'm trying olive oil pastry, recipe from the net. If it's
terrible, we have some blackcurrant/bctliqueur sorbet which I made a couple
of weeks ago from an old recipe last used before we had an icecream maker
and used hand whisking during freezing. Liked it then and it's still vg. No
dairy there!

Hope this doesn't die, though.

Leftover pasta and sauce for us:) When I have to go out in the day, I

The olive oil pastry.......

Made exactly as detailed and looked good but it didn't brown at all so I
followed a suggestion (just proving Not My Fault you understand!) that I
gave it a short time in a hot oven and I forgot it for rather longer while
chatting to guests so it came out rather browner. However, tasted ok and
I'll try the pastry again, infact I still have some offcuts in the fridge
to make something small today.

Sorbet.....
Sorbet was as good as when made (should be of course; we run the freezers
at -21C, gather "normal is -18, so meat except for game lasts plenty of
time). The sharpness and concentration of flavour was a bit of a shock to
one person! We tend to use a bit less sugar than most recipes specify when
the mechanics of the dish permit.

Well today I am going to make a Sweet Potato amd Cranberry Cake - just for fun. I am not really a baker so could be interesting ...

I will probably have Mushroom Balls, made with Mushroom, Cheese, Ground Almonds, Onion and Breadcrumbs, oh yes and an egg, this evening with a Creme Fraiche, Lemon and Basil Sauce. Tomorrow I am going to try Anjum Anand's Poussin with Saffron Yogurt Sauce, using a Chicken rather than Poussins.

dish of mixed veggies (potatoes, cauliflower, peas carrots, runner beans)
in a creamy sauce with paneer(fresh curd cheese), almonds. I made it from
memory, I had made it once before about 10 years ago. Went down a treat.

Tonight will probably be drop-scones. I like to put grated cheese and
choped ham on mine - the end up like small, thick, crepes.

having a discussion where you can't say more than one sentence at a
time. At least it's a step up from the Twitter limit of 140 characters
in which to make any pronouncement. Facebook is far better suited to
shallow chit chat as opposed to discussion. It does however allow
pictures to be posted as well as words which is great advantage.

On the other hand we have uk.f+d.misc as text only, no limit to
characters, words, lines or even pages in which discussion could flow
....... but almost nobody around to make the discussion valuable.

its nothing to do with what individuals post, the walking group
disappeared in a period I didn't even post there, :-) a travel group
died as political tr*lls became a majority, its just because nobody
joins usenet anymore and the old posters fade away. There's FB,
there's loads of web based fora, that is where people go now.

Are you saying that I can set up an anonymous FB a/c without any phone at
all?

phone is only to secure your account from being hacked, as you are not
using a public PC or your laptop on a campus I doubt anybody will be
doing that. Even if somebody did you could just start another as
anonymous A/Cs are expendable. If you can find the phone its better as
it helps if you lose password or whatever else might go wrong. (Some
newspapers only allow comments from secured a/cs, but thats not
relevant to food group).

Best way IMHO is set up a gmail a/c, say ***@gmail.com
Choose a name, Jane G Devon?
Register, refuse help finding freinds etc, fill in false info, then
search for food and drink UK and join. Find all the newspapers and
subscribe. Find NFU if its there, ditto?
Job done.

Well although Usenet is quieter than before, I don't really see any signs of
the doomsayers that it will soon be gone. You are right about fb it seems
the young ones are not happy that the oldies are now joining and want to be
off to other places. Who knows? Not me:))

groups need removing.

My experience of FB was less than good and I still can't see the point of
it. I suppose I need someone to demonstrate its usefulness (if there is any)
before I decide whether or not to rejoin.

it certainly asked me if I wanted it to do that sort of thing with
email addresses, I said no. It wouldn't have got far as I doubt it
understood my email setup.

sorry, I mean the address books of course. Somebody starting up has no
"friends". When I started I had to find people to "friend" for myself.
Google does not show me a furore over this, as I would expect, I can

AFAIK. I just found the whole system far too intrusive. Perhaps there was a
box that I failed to tick. Anyway, my experience was not at all positive.

That's just one group. If I used a FB group or a Web forum for the
same number of Usenet groups I use it would take me all day just to
check them.

to confirm from the link in the mail.

I clicked on the confirmation link and immediately entered Facebook.
Type Food and Drink UK in the search box and then choose groups.

That's it your in. I've had my real FB account for sometime and have
never given anymore information, I've avoided having any 'Friends', and
never receive any junk mail from Facebook.

As I've said before I don't like the way FB works but worries about what
it gets to know are groundless unless you explicitly allow it by
clicking everything in sight.
