Nothing here anymore is there? Or rather nobody. I tried advertising
the group on the FB page but nada. Anyway, if those remaining wish to
find the FB version, its called "food and drink UK". BTW, there is
also "techie news" if you want to read, er, techie news. I find FB has
some obvious clunkiness for debate but it has two advantages, people
are there and the media post news there. In addition, its possible to
use the "friend" feature to debate OT stuff on your own or A. N.
Others pages.

Well I am going mad today with a rack of pork:) Not had one in ages but it
was reduced on the 'used meat' counter (joke from long since that has stuck)

Will roast it of course along with roast tatties and veggies. I get to
choose from cabbage, green beans, swede or cauliflower (but I was thinking
of saving that for a cheese sauce tomorrow ... sigh .. decisions, decisions
;-)

Yesterday I made a lovely pot roast of which there are two portions in the
freezer for another day. That turned out really lovely:)) Served that
with mash and carrots!

How about you?

We bought some Black Farmer pork sausages. Previously they have been
good but today were a challenge to the teeth as they were 85% gristle.

But I did leave for work at 2am and not get back until 6pm.

And I did avoid the McDonalds on Oxford Street at dinner time and eat at a
nice deli just off Oxford Street. I could not afford to eat in The London
Edition - they charge £36 for a Bacardi and coke

How in the world do they justify those prices???

its a flash hotel with flash prices, central London has enough people
concerned about quality and exclusivity but not about price to allow
it. Russian oligarchs & bankers for instance.

Well the job in Lambeth last year was for a rich Russian model. She needed
to eat a mixed grill IMHO. She was far too thin to be healthy. And Lambeth
is more expensive than the West End for us workers wanting to eat out.

She is worth waiting for. I have only seen her at weekends since New Year.
It was nice to spend this week with her.

BTW I did the washing up - I do not mind doing that.

And the Bacardi and coke. It's not uncommon to see the press photographing
people getting into taxi outside there. I assume they are famous people.

Tonights snack is bacon and egg sandwiches.

The bacon is from here

http://www.cannonhallfarm.co.uk/farm-shop/

the eggs are from a friend that has chickens (who needs washed eggs?) and
the bread is from the local bakers -we have a very large bakery in the
village.

And then we shall go to the pub:-)

Tonight is a take away:-)
Someone came to our door recently and held a bag out to me and asked for
money. I told him that I had not ordered anything. He was East European
and did not have much English but insisted it was our number.
I looked at the scrawl on it but did not see our number and it was not
our post code. The name was an approximation of one I knew so I sent him
off to No 39.

Anyway, your lovely gf made you a nice mixed grill! Worth waiting
for eh?:))
She is worth waiting for. I have only seen her at weekends since
New Year. It was nice to spend this week with her.
Awwww :)) and she certainly was pleased to see you, hence the nice
mixed grill:)
Post by ARW
BTW I did the washing up - I do not mind doing that.
Excellent:)) ;-) You need to keep that lady on side:))
I bought her an engagement ring just before I found out that I would
be working away for several months.......
That was bad timing.
Did you not give it to her?
Ooh err missus.
No need to be rude.
Some people do not think before speaking:-)

Nothing here anymore is there? Or rather nobody. I tried advertising
the group on the FB page but nada. Anyway, if those remaining wish to
find the FB version, its called "food and drink UK". BTW, there is
also "techie news" if you want to read, er, techie news. I find FB has
some obvious clunkiness for debate but it has two advantages, people
are there and the media post news there. In addition, its possible to
use the "friend" feature to debate OT stuff on your own or A. N.
Others pages.
I guess people could discuss what they are cooking ...
Or discuss what other people cook for them.
Last night my gf cooked me a mixed grill:-)
Sounds fairynuff to me:)) You are just spoilt! You know that, don't
you?:))
I added my own HP sauce :-)
Such an innovator ;-)
But I did leave for work at 2am and not get back until 6pm.
And I did avoid the McDonalds on Oxford Street at dinner time and eat at
a nice deli just off Oxford Street. I could not afford to eat in The
London Edition - they charge £36 for a Bacardi and coke
There are some quite good restaurants in little side streets
particularly off the Strand.
We often went to the Stockpot in Old Compton Street or the other one
that was opposite the Comedy Theater (now The Harold Pinter Theater)

In an evening when we are in digs, the nearest place to eat is a Jamacian

Well, since you ask, last night it was a very nice rump steak, first for a
long time, local and bought from the Totnes Food market and BBQd. Mashed
potato & swede to accompany - what my mother used to call "potch" - no idea
why, ideas appreciated - with sliced white cabbage and mushrooms and
quartered tomatos in butter shown a frying pan for a very short time. Plain
yogurt to follow (I had a bit of quince preserve in mine).

Tonight we have friends coming to share our bubbletub and they are bringing
the main course. I'm doing the pud and she has said that he would feel very
loved if somebody took the trouble to do a pie for him using dairy-free
pastry so I'm trying olive oil pastry, recipe from the net. If it's
terrible, we have some blackcurrant/bctliqueur sorbet which I made a couple
of weeks ago from an old recipe last used before we had an icecream maker
and used hand whisking during freezing. Liked it then and it's still vg. No
dairy there!

Hope this doesn't die, though.
Cheers

Following on:
The olive oil pastry.......

Made exactly as detailed and looked good but it didn't brown at all so I
followed a suggestion (just proving Not My Fault you understand!) that I
gave it a short time in a hot oven and I forgot it for rather longer while
chatting to guests so it came out rather browner. However, tasted ok and
I'll try the pastry again, infact I still have some offcuts in the fridge
to make something small today.

Sorbet.....
Sorbet was as good as when made (should be of course; we run the freezers
at -21C, gather "normal is -18, so meat except for game lasts plenty of
time). The sharpness and concentration of flavour was a bit of a shock to
one person! We tend to use a bit less sugar than most recipes specify when
the mechanics of the dish permit.

Well today I am going to make a Sweet Potato amd Cranberry Cake - just for fun. I am not really a baker so could be interesting ...

I will probably have Mushroom Balls, made with Mushroom, Cheese, Ground Almonds, Onion and Breadcrumbs, oh yes and an egg, this evening with a Creme Fraiche, Lemon and Basil Sauce. Tomorrow I am going to try Anjum Anand's Poussin with Saffron Yogurt Sauce, using a Chicken rather than Poussins.

I knocked up a Sabzi dilrubi - or at least my version of one, an Indian
dish of mixed veggies (potatoes, cauliflower, peas carrots, runner beans)
in a creamy sauce with paneer(fresh curd cheese), almonds. I made it from
memory, I had made it once before about 10 years ago. Went down a treat.

Tonight will probably be drop-scones. I like to put grated cheese and
choped ham on mine - the end up like small, thick, crepes.

I post on FB now but get frustrated by its limitations. It's a bit like
having a discussion where you can't say more than one sentence at a
time. At least it's a step up from the Twitter limit of 140 characters
in which to make any pronouncement. Facebook is far better suited to
shallow chit chat as opposed to discussion. It does however allow
pictures to be posted as well as words which is great advantage.

On the other hand we have uk.f+d.misc as text only, no limit to
characters, words, lines or even pages in which discussion could flow
....... but almost nobody around to make the discussion valuable.

I'll probably get shot for saying this but I believe that it is this
freedom to write as much as like that has actually killed uk.f+d.misc
There have been many spats here where someone or other has pronounced
they're leaving because someone else has said bad or untrue things about
them. From this the FB group emerged and NO, there aren't 'spats'
there. Why? Because you can't say more than sentence or two at a time.
Good on the one hand but too restrictive on the other.

Anyway, I made Peanut Butter & Jelly Ice-Cream yesterday, a picture and
recipe here http://afoodiediary.com/peanut-butter-jelly-ice-cream/

yes, usenet is the perfect vehicle. Theres of course no limit on size
of FB posts, just no auto quoting or precise threading.

I write very long things on FB, but I have no faith that anyone reads them. People who will be childish will be childish anywhere, but I think nastiness is avoided on FB ukfood+drink because the admins delete anything abusive or spammy.

partly also because the lack of precise quoting and threading makes
point by point arguments less natural. I'm coming round to the
advantages of each poster writing a general response rather than
dissecting word by word.

it encourages a single reasoned comment over nit picking each
sentence. Don't get me wrong, as I said, the usenet format is best but
FB format does have some advantages. The biggest advantage being there
are people there.

in which to make any pronouncement.
Part of the reason I guess but it's not mandatory to read anything you are
not interested in - the only disadvantage to the reader is the bandwidth
used and hence time taken to come down.

There have been many spats here where someone or other has pronounced
they're leaving because someone else has said bad or untrue things about
them.
Also because they don't like thread drift. However, I don't consider the
politics behind either the ability to afford to buy food or of food
production and food commerce as thread drift in a food & drink group.

Cheers

From this the FB group emerged and NO, there aren't 'spats'
there. Why? Because you can't say more than sentence or two at a time.
Good on the one hand but too restrictive on the other.
Anyway, I made Peanut Butter & Jelly Ice-Cream yesterday, a picture and
recipe here http://afoodiediary.com/peanut-butter-jelly-ice-cream/

its nothing to do with what individuals post, the walking group
disappeared in a period I didn't even post there, :-) a travel group
died as political tr*lls became a majority, its just because nobody
joins usenet anymore and the old posters fade away. There's FB,
there's loads of web based fora, that is where people go now.

Ready meals taking over from cooking fresh ingredients from scratch.
Microwave cookers taking over from real stoves.
Plastic pots taking over from saucepans, cake tins, casserole dishes

Are you saying that I can set up an anonymous FB a/c without any phone at

phone is only to secure your account from being hacked, as you are not
using a public PC or your laptop on a campus I doubt anybody will be
doing that. Even if somebody did you could just start another as
anonymous A/Cs are expendable. If you can find the phone its better as
it helps if you lose password or whatever else might go wrong. (Some
newspapers only allow comments from secured a/cs, but thats not
relevant to food group).

Best way IMHO is set up a gmail a/c, say ***@gmail.com
Choose a name, Jane G Devon?
Register, refuse help finding freinds etc, fill in false info, then
search for food and drink UK and join. Find all the newspapers and
subscribe. Find NFU if its there, ditto?
Job done.

Well although Usenet is quieter than before, I don't really see any signs of

Usenet has been fragmenting for decades. About 75% of the unused

OK, so its with permission, so again I see no problem*, its just
helping you find people you might know, I obviously said "no" at the

* possibly some dimwit gave permission for his address book containing

option). The only truthful thing I gave was the necessary e-mail
address.

After the first page giving the above information there were 5 or 6 more
all asking about friends, wanting a profile, a picture of me, sign up to
receive stories etc. But on every one of these pages there was a 'Skip
and continue' link bottom right - I used it on every page. Finally, it
said an e-mail had been sent to the address I'd given and that I needed
to confirm from the link in the mail.

I clicked on the confirmation link and immediately entered Facebook.
Type Food and Drink UK in the search box and then choose groups.

That's it your in. I've had my real FB account for sometime and have
never given anymore information, I've avoided having any 'Friends', and
never receive any junk mail from Facebook.

As I've said before I don't like the way FB works but worries about what
it gets to know are groundless unless you explicitly allow it by
clicking everything in sight.

With all the suspicion about Facebook I thought I'd set up a fictitious
account to remind myself what information it needed - nothing other than
a working e-mail address.
