Self checkout at M&S.

We bought two items priced at £4.50 each or two for £8.
At the self service check out it took several attempts to scan the first
item. When it scanned my wife put it in her own bag that she had put on
the scale. I told her to take if off as usually in other supermarkets
that produces a warning. The next item would not scan and a warning
notice came up on the screen.
I called an assistant over and she said the system had hung as the item
scanned had been taken off the scale. She reset the screen and we
scanned the items again and up came a total of £9.By now I was about to
leave the items but I called her back and she went to customer services
who confirmed that we were being asked for the wrong amount.
The Customer Service girl said that she already knew of this error and
did a transaction at her terminal to produce a bill for £8.
I said that Tesco would have given me the items for nothing. Not here
she said. I put my hand out expectantly for my change from £20 that she
had forgotten about. She hands me £11!

Do tell me? You will recall that I recently had a second ham problem
with Waitrose. Sainsbury's only take responsibility for their own brand
products and get argumentative as do Morrison's. Lidl prevaricate if you
complain and we don't have an Aldi..
I find that Tesco are the best for service, product range and quality.
Please support them as I am a shareholder who is suffering a loss on my
investment and in trouble for buying some for my wife:-)

Oh dear:( Well I first shop at Lidl and what I can't get from there I buy
from Tesco:)

Lidl's fresh veg seem to have gone downhill recently but I do buy a few
things from there. Tesco are sweet talking me atm with coupons for money
off the things I regularly buy there so ... <g>

Given that you have Tesco shares, I am surprised to hear you shop anywhere
else!

£5 extra on the weekly shop doesn't result in £250 more dividend at year end (sadly).

I find Tesco cheaper than Asda though that is possibly because of years of living in a tescopoly has conditioned me to buy only the things that are cheap in Tesco.

Tesco £2.20 for a fray bentos pie when they're £1 in Poundland really is taking the P on pricing. (Not that I have a F.B. pie very often!)

I wish that they had shareholder perks
Is the Poundland pie the same size?
We find that Sinsburys (typo but it sounds better) price have gone up
more than the others this year.

I think so.

I suppose it's possible that it's a slightly smaller Poundland-special product (so many branded products are made smaller for pound shops) but it's still a Serves One [1] For A Main Meal size.

It's actually a Princes pie, not a Fray Bentos.

Suspiciously similar recipes though.

Ooff that is a lot. The only thing I buy in Poundland is Domestos spray
cleaner. Can't remember exactly but it costs about 35p more in Tesco.

You'd be banging your head on a brick wall.

I e-mailed M&S customer services with a complaint and didn't receive a
reply. I then sent TWO letters by 'Signed for' Royal Mail, one
addressed to Marc Bolland the Chief Exec and one personally to the
Director responsible for the area about which I was complaining. The
address used was corporate HQ. 3 weeks later still no reply from
anybody despite the letters being signed for.

Absolutely pi$$ed off with them I asked publicly on Twitter why they
ignored customer correspondence. The reply was to 'private message'
them with details. They didn't seem to grasp that you can't 'private
message' someone who does not follow you! I ended up publicly posting
on Twitter a web address where my letters could be read by anyone.

And then a reply ....... but only from Secretary's Assistant or someone
of similar status enclosing a £25 gift voucher. There was some waffle
about my complaint but it appeared not to have been fully understood.

I'll never set foot inside an M&S again, the Gift Voucher I gave to
charity.

This is not historic, it happened in the past 12 weeks.

Earlier this week I bought a replacement Radio/CD player/cassette player
for the bedroom from Argos. I thought all CD players coped with MP3 Cd's
nowadays as the last two we had did as did a very old 'Walkman' type
player. From the catalogue it seemed not to play MP3 CD's but the web
site made me think otherwise.
I went to Argos and asked to see one to read what it said on the box.
It just said Radio/CD/Cassette player. I told the guy who had brought it
up and the girl on the till that it still was not clear but that I would
take it and if it did not play MP3's I would bring it back. They did not
raise any objection.
It did not play MP3 discs but had an audio in that you could use with an
MP3 player or phone.
I took it back and explained the situation to a different till girl.
She asked if it had been used. I said only to try a a disc in it.
She replied that means its used and I can't take it back. A conversation
ensues where I say that they have always taken items back before that
proved not suitable although worked and it was not as if it was a
washing machine or vacuum cleaner that would have shown usage.
I told her that another E-Mail would be going to their CEO (previous
complaint in that branch)
She calls her superior over who takes the same stance saying that she
could not sell it again as it had been opened and used. Eventually she
agreed to giving me a refund. I leave telling them that I will never
darken their doorstep again:-)
During all of this a very old man was who had brought back a 'dustette'
that he said would not fully charge was being treated like the village
idiot.
At home I get the catalogue out and read:
You know you're in safe hands with Argos. Our products have a 30 day
money back guarantee*. If you change your mind within 30 days, or an
item or an item is faulty or damaged you can either:
Return it to us in store, with your receipt or order number and payment
card* Call us on 0845 640 0800 to arrange a free exchange or collection

* Some items are not included in our 30 day money back guarantee. For
full details, see www.argos.co.uk/customerservices.

That again says 'unused'and my item did not have the mark of Cain symbol
against it:

"If I change my mind... Within 30 days
Most things we sell are covered by our 30-day money-back guarantee, so
just return them to us unused, in their original undamaged packaging, in
a saleable condition, with your receipt and we’ll give you a refund.
If a product is excluded from our 30-day money-back guarantee, it is
clearly marked by a † next to the product name in the catalogue and on
this website"

As we're discussing food shopping......

Meat: Riverford, Local monthly food market in Totnes, local independent
butchers. Not smkts for some years now.
Veg: as for meat substituting L. greengrocers for local butchers. If I shop
in S. Brent which sadly no longer has a dedicated g'grocer, I buy fruit &
veg at the deli, otherwise the Coop.
Bread: He makes.
Basic groceries such as flour, sugar, T&T ("Tins & Toilet paper") etc:
varies - some small trips to Coop or S'buries, otherwise eg Totnes
Morrisons (parking free if you buy £5 goods).
Milk. Riverford; 18 litres or so every 10-14 days or so and frozen
immediately. Get it out the night before you want to use it.
Readymade pies occasionally - made by a local firm and Mole Valley Farmers
outlet.
Eggs - neighbour.

Parking's an important factor - if I can't park conveniently at reasonable
price I don't shop there unless the product is particularly important.

Tend to "remember" things I didn't like - for instance, the coop in Totnes
wanted me to walk down to the bottom of the town and back to find a
catalogue number to save them the "trouble" of looking it up in their
catalogue. I have no plans to shop in that store ever again.

Don't shop online - not sufficiently organised! And I'd rather use local
suppliers.
Cheers

my main shop is now online at Ocado. (Unlike the big supermarkets they
do source from relatively smaller places that do seasonal or
occasional stuff). The reason being they have a much wider range of
stuff than the supermarkets and seasonals aside its nearly always in
stock. for instance, they always have sweet white onions while
Waitrose/Tesco are sporadic at best. Also lots of interesting things
like red spring onions and wild garlic (from west country).

I also use a couple of websites for meat (Scotland) and fish
(Cornwall)

For Easter they did a range of unusual french soft cheeses that you
rarely see anywhere here.
I do use the baker at the end of the road (bakes here on site).
Obviously in London you cannot concentrate on local produce and I'm
not sure I should even try. How would suppliers survive in areas og
low population if we all bought local?

anywhere else!
With coupons and £5 off vouchers we usually save about £9 without taking
reduced items or other offers into account.
I have Greggs shares but would not eat their stuff:-) Nor do I bank with
either of the banks I have shares in and I no longer use BT or Vodaphone
for phone or Internet.
Hmmm strange :))) not a good advert for your companies then:)

As for ready made stuff ... I prefer to make my own unless it is impossible.

We bought two items priced at £4.50 each or two for £8.
At the self service check out it took several attempts to scan the
first item. When it scanned my wife put it in her own bag that she had
put on the scale. I told her to take if off as usually in other
supermarkets that produces a warning. The next item would not scan and
a warning notice came up on the screen.
I called an assistant over and she said the system had hung as the
item scanned had been taken off the scale. She reset the screen and we
scanned the items again and up came a total of £9.By now I was about
to leave the items but I called her back and she went to customer
services who confirmed that we were being asked for the wrong amount.
The Customer Service girl said that she already knew of this error and
did a transaction at her terminal to produce a bill for £8.
I said that Tesco would have given me the items for nothing. Not here
she said. I put my hand out expectantly for my change from £20 that
she had forgotten about. She hands me £11!
Good service eh? Pah! You know where to take your business in future.
Do tell me? You will recall that I recently had a second ham problem
with Waitrose. Sainsbury's only take responsibility for their own
brand products and get argumentative as do Morrison's. Lidl
prevaricate if you complain and we don't have an Aldi..
I find that Tesco are the best for service, product range and quality.
Please support them as I am a shareholder who is suffering a loss on
my investment and in trouble for buying some for my wife:-)
Oh dear:( Well I first shop at Lidl and what I can't get from there I
buy from Tesco:)
Lidl's fresh veg seem to have gone downhill recently but I do buy a few
things from there. Tesco are sweet talking me atm with coupons for
money off the things I regularly buy there so ... <g>

One share that has more than doubled for me in a relatively short time
is Hilton Foods a meat packaging company. They started out as a small
company in Huntingdon around 1994. They package meats for supermarkets
in depots here on the continent and in Asia and Australia.

The Tesco stores in China sell many strange (to us) items.
