Here's a copy of an e-mail I've just sent to Waitrose customer service:-
Subject: The Butterworks Cornish Butter with Sea Salt
I purchased this butter believing and trusting it to be a Cornish
product made with Cornish produce. I was only able to look closely at
the label when I got home :-(
It's not made from Cornish milk, simply British milk like many cheaper
butters. It's not even packed in Cornwall but another country! Wales.
The website https://thebutterworks.co.uk/lightly-salted-cornish/ makes the claim
"Only two ingredients: butter and sea salt!" But the label on the
wrapper lists butter and "Salt (1.2%), Sea Salt (0.8%)". So it's not only butter
and sea salt? It's butter, sodium chloride and sea salt!
I expect that you will tell me that this is all perfectly legal.

Waitrose have responded saying that they contacted the supplier who has
told them that it's made from Cornish cream.

I find that very difficult to believe since they make no claim to that
on the packaging simply referring to British milk.

This is very unsatisfactory and I'm contacting Trading Standards. It's
no different to UK milk being transported to France, churned in a
factory and then returned in bulk to the UK where it's packaged and
described as French Butter!

That can't be right?

I don't see any reason why being labelled as "British milk" should
imply that it is not from Cornwall. They probably say "British milk"
rather than just "milk" to please the dairy industry.

Whilst upsetting the Cornish milk producers whose product they portray
it as being made from.

Or, maybe to please certain Welsh racists who will have nothing to do with
anything described as “English”.

Well - we don't really have much of an equivalent to the AOC system
here, and with Brexit, I guess whatever guarantees we have will
evaporate. To roughly quote Python "24 hour cleaners, well that's just
the name innit?"

It appears that the company is Welsh. It lists its HQ as an address in
Caerphilly.

From the blurb, the ‘Cornish’ description comes from the milk being
churned in Cornwall. However, it seems to produce rather a lot of food miles
if the milk comes from outside Cornwall, goes to the county for a bit of
churning and then is taken to Wales for packing.

Unfortunately, it is not listed on my Waitrose online ordering webpages, nor
is it on Ocado. However, they do have a Trewithen Butter which appears to be
the real deal, but tends to be pricey.
