Chip shop pies in general.

Seeing the post about meat and potato pie, I have to express my
disappointment that otherwise good chip-shops sell pies that are
sub-standard.

I had a "steak and kidney" pie the other day and apart from two chunks
very chewy, tasteless meat (undefined), the rest consisted of a thin,
salty brown sauce with a few bits of something in it, an inner lining
of soggy, uncooked pastry and a tasteless puff pastry case.

This cost me £1.70. Why do the chip shops not provide home-made,
meaty pies? - I would be prepared to spend the same as a piece of fish
- £3.20 around here - for a decent pie.

I probably wouldn't buy a meat pie from a chip shop, to be honest. If the
chip shop good enough for me to be going there, I'd have the fish and chips
because that's what they do best!

I guess I'm spoiled though, here in Reading, because we have as good a pie
shop as you'll find anywhere in the form of Sweeney & Todd (which is a
curious, possibly unique, combination of shop, pub and cafe). Yes, there
is a barber's shop next door. No, I don't know why the pie shop isn't
called Lovett's.

When I was in London last week I made a point of going out of my way to have
my lunch at a pie and mash shop. London's traditional fast food is dying
out, and I can't for the life of me think why anybody would prefer a
cardboard burger to a plate of pie, mash and liquor.

Cost too much?

I doubt that there will be many like you. People who like tasty
home-made pies are more likely to make their own than go to
the chippy to buy them.

Just as some chippies up the coast from me (I live in Edinburgh)
are renowned for their fish, perhaps chippes in meaty parts
of the UK should excel in quality meat pies?

The pies sold by the West Cornwall Pasty Company are quite tasty.

Business philosophy,
buy it as cheaply as you can and sell it for as much as you can.
Maximise your profits.

Personal philosophy,
If you want something to your satisfaction, make it yourself.
It`ll taste much better just knowing what`s actually in it.
Nobody gives you something for nothing.
