Just got back from a lovely week in Scilly.
Self catering for the first time, previously B&B; planned to eat out lunch
& evening as usual so no change there. THought we'd breakfast out too but
that interfered with pub lunch so that knocked that one one the head - just
cereal/coffee & down to the harbour to see which boats were going where.
Well, we could also pop out and get fresh croissants from the Coop opposite
at 8.30am......
Plenty of good fish although I fancy there are more spices being used in
veg which, I guess, is fashion although not always my taste - ok, I'm old
fashioned, and probably getting more so; rather like new potatos to taste
like new potatos. Being in the centre of Hughtown meant that there were a
variety of good restaurants for evenings within a few minutes walk and we
tried as many as we fancied from the menus outside.
Favourite? Well maybe Dibble and Grub overlooking the beach at Porthcressa
but all good we tried.
Main fish were bass, hake, megrim, shellfish all excellent. Many
restaurants had changed hands since last year, or so the taxi driver from
the airport told us, mainly for the better, one or two perhaps not (only
from their menus outside - didn't try if didn't see an enticing meal!).
Essential to book. Troytown farm icecream made on St Agnes seems to be
spreading and is the best icecream I know, to the extent that if the
icecream wasn't Troytown then we generally gave it a miss, maybe
unjustifiably but Troytown's just too strong competition) - particularly
sitting in the sun on the cliff edge by the farm, overlooking a brilliant
blue sea, together with a punnet of fresh strawberries from a stall nearby,
and accompanied by a variety of interested thrushes & sparrows. On that
topic we had lunch one day out at Carn Vean - cafe out in the country on St
Mary's* - where there are tables on the lawn and sparrows which took a very
keen interest in your sandwiches if you turned your back for a moment.
Sparrows at the Seven Stones pub on St Martins would eat from your hand,
tugging bits off the piece you held out. Other unexpected pleasure was that
the restaurants generally knew how to make chips; seems to be a dying art
generally, I find. Complaint? Portions too big for me!!!!
Now when can I go back next year?
Cheers

* You can hire a golf cart for a day to travel around St Mary's - there are
nice places which would be a long walk, often prohibitive for many people
but the cart makes possible.
