I took on an allotment 9 months ago and am now reaping the benefits.

Dinner tonight was roast beef, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, boiled
kale, boiled runner beans and boiled carrots. Everything but the cow
I'd grown myself!

The first harvest was garlic (enough to last until next year). Then
broad beans followed by the onions, only enough for a couple of months,
then runner beans and now the kale, parsnips and sweetcorn. And I've
just harvested the last of the rhubarb. I've also had tons of
gooseberries, red currants and enough black currants to make 5 litres of
Creme de Cassis as well as jam etc.

I just wish I'd started this years ago :-(

Things you've grown always taste better. I don't think it is always just
a mental thing. Freshness is often a key factor in taste, especially in
fruit and salad items. You didn't mention Cauli and Broccoli, try them
raw- fresh from the garden they are excellent. Ditto peas.

Local allotments here have chickens and an apiary.

On Tyneside (my original home area) it is common for then to have pigeon
