Anyone got any good ideas for living with rationing 2020 style?

I don't mean the "Waitrose has sold out of quinoa" type restrictions, but there's no pasta or tomato puree / passata to be had for love nor money locally.

I did look contemplatively at the Woofy Chunks in Gravy with added Vegetables.

Go early in the morning. They re-stock the shelves overnight. For
example, I went to my s/m on Wednesday morning to buy milk and noted
that the toilet paper shelves were full:-)

If people get this bug and the symptoms resemble flu (to what extend is
open to debate), are they going to feel like eating?

When I’ve have colds and / or flu, the last thing I feel like is food, at
least not much of it.

Last time I had flu (proper flu) I was kept alive on microwaveable curry meals.

The only thing I could taste, and didn't take any cooking.

The most I can manage is usually soup when I’ve got a cold or flu,
sometimes just toast.

Fortunately I tend to shake things off quite quickly- even since my stroke-
so a few days without a proper meal is no big deal.

We tend to stock up periodically on staples more for convenience- nothing
to do with the current situation- so the freezers are generally full,
either of meat, fish etc or meals we’ve forward cooked- we are great fans
of casseroles, stews, soups etc. Plus we keep a stock of things for
motorhome trips- especially for the days we travel on.

If things get really bad there are squirrels in the area and Senior
Management’s pet hamster is fattening up nicely ;-)

So do I.

But my periodic staple-buying was planned for yesterday.

Especially in the late summer, when we have a glut of home grown tomatoes,
I make my own purée. It doesn’t use that many so, if as I noticed locally,
people seem to be ignored the fresh stuff, just buy some fresh tomatoes.

I just throw them in a liquidiser but you can remove the seeds or even the
skins.

Making your own pasta is also an option. A machine isn’t essential, penne
like pasta can be made with a knitting needle.

Yes, I’ve not seen that but I can see how it would work.

I’ve made flat pasta once, a long time ago. I decided it wasn’t worth the
hassle- I’m not a great fan of pasta. I much prefer rice or potatoes as a
source of starch.

I think I prefer good bread. I have stocked up with bread flour, both
white and wholewheat, and baked a batch of sourdough this morning.

I’m a good bread man. I don’t pretend my homemade bread is good but I like
good bread ;-)

We bought a sensible amount of bread making ingredients in but haven’t gone
crazy- an extra pack etc. The media and Internet stirrers have whipped up
quite a panic but most of those who are panicking probably couldn’t bake
bread to save their lives.

As do I. Haven't used it for a while, but I have plenty of eggs, and a
decent supply of flour. I even have one of those forms for making raviolini.

Mmm. As I burnt the penne tonight (wandered off without putting any water in it) I'm not sure I'll try anything too advanced.
