Branston Beans v Heinz Baked Beans

For me it's Heinz,.., but the missus has started buying Branston Beans
and says she prefers the flavour. I don't know why she doesn't just
add some paprika to her share of Heinz and we can all be happy.

Does anyone else prefer Branston (or any other brand) to Heinz?

Good luck!

June insists on Morrisons own brand.

Wasn't there some to-do over this a few years ago when Heinz upped the juice
in their baked beans and reduced the bean content? This kept the same
weight but in a very finagling kind of a way, if I'm remembering correctly.

Don't know if you have them there, but in the US, there's Bush's Baked
Beans (no relation to GW). My family and I love `em. There's also the
"Spicy" variety with chili powder and cilantro. I like those even better as
does my two year old granddaughter.

......................They may not be related to the president but their
slogan is "Thick and Rich" which seems to fit both the beans and George
Dubya!!

My favourites used to be Crosse and Blackwell, without which we wouldn't
have had Bob Marley....!

You will have to excuse my ignorance here, what is cilantro and what
does it do to the beans?

Reason I ask, is that we have our grand daughters up for the week and I
am always looking for something that they can try. Mother does lots of
dishes, like all the different types of curries, but my wife frowns on
all that. She does not even like me feeding the youngest with garlic
pate and says that she should have a word with our daughter. So you can
see what I am up against.

It is the coriander plant. The seeds impart a delightful lemony flavour.
The leaves (cilantro) taste of soap. Some disagree with the latter.

I think I disagree with the former too. I like coriander seed but I
wouldn't call it lemony, unlike cardamom.

Over here we just call it coriander. Cilantro is the American, and
apparently Canadian, term.

If you chew a coriander seed it does indeed have a somewhat lemony
flavour, though I don't really notice it as that when I cook with it.
On the contrary, it's the leaves that have a really fresh, lemon-like
flavour.

If coriander leaves taste soapy, perhaps I should eat more soap.

I have never detected any lemon taste in cilantro - just soap! I think that
this must be one of those genetic traits akin to the smell of urine after
eating asparagus. Apparently, those that claim that their pee doesn't stink
after eating asparagus lack the sensor that detects that particular
chemical.

It's more complicated than that. Some people don't produce the odour,
and some can't smell it. See

Could you describe the taste of soap. Are you sure you are not
identifying with a perfume in soap or something?

From the fount of all knowledge (Wikipedia):
"The leaves are variously referred to as coriander leaves, cilantro (in the
United States, from the Spanish name for the plant), dhania (in the Indian
subcontinent, and increasingly, in Britain), Chinese parsley or Mexican
parsley. The leaves have a very different taste from the seeds, similar to
parsley but "juicier" and with citrus-like overtones. Some people instead
perceive an unpleasant "soapy" taste and/or a rank smell. This perception is
believed to be a result of an enzyme that changes the way they taste
cilantro, a genetic trait, but has yet to be fully researched."

Well it ain't Dior's Diorissimo, I guarantee but it tastes soapy to me, too.

sounds like the comments that were put down in the test kitchen of a
large poultry processor a few years ago - they were experimenting
withw coating that had lemongrass in it as a new variation to their
breaded/ coated products - this particualr trial mix juat wasn't
quite right and the feedback from a mixture of team leaders,
engineering types and managers was " this coating mix is wrong it
leaves a 'washing up liquid' aftertaste - which i'm sure most people
have accientially met before ...

Depending upon whomever you ask the answer may be different. Cilantro to
me has a flavor that I find hard to describe. Pleasantly pungent is the
best description I can offer. I don't taste the lemony flavor some say it
has.

Just before typing this, I read an opinion that alleged that whether one
likes cilantro or not is related to genetics. If that person is right, it
doesn't mean you must be Spanish or Latin American as none of us are.
However, if you are among the unlucky, you may discover that it has a
"soapy" flavor. Speaking only for my family, we have never tasted a hint
soapy flavor.

We like to put cilantro in homemade chili. I chop the leaves up as tiny
as possible to get as much flavor as possible and so that it gets
distributed evenly. As with anything, too much cilantro can overpower the
other flavors in a recipe so be aware.

Good Luck,

Never have been a fan of Heinz, to my mind the beans are a little too mushy
and the sauce anaemic looking and lacking flavour.

The best beans of all used to be Crosse & Blackwell (in the predominantly
green tin), as the beans were firmer, had a richer sauce which included
garlic powder - a key ingredient to my bean experience. Sadly these were
withdrawn from the market a few years ago and I have been looking for a
suitable substitute ever since.

The new Crosse & Blackwell Branston beans are passable as a substitute, with
a close second being HP beans.
