With the widespread adoption of those pay-at-the-table credit card machines,
some restos here are trying to persuade you to tip 20%!!
I wonder what the situation in Australia is nowadays. When I lived there in
the early 70s, one didn't tip at all.

I stick to 10% and do it in cash

15% is the norm here for adequate/good service.

Visited in the early 2000's and was told by my mate who lives there
not to. Service there is seen as an honourable profession and is paid
well so there is no need to top up their wages.

On our last night in Sydney we went to a restaurant on Darling Harbour.
A very nice chatty Irish girl showed us to our table. We got into
conversation about Aussie food, wine and service compared to at home.
She said to call her if we had any problems. I told her that I am always
hard to please so she might hear from me:-)
We had a Vietnamese waiter whose English was not too good. Only one
starter arrived and I beckoned over the Irish girl who apologised and
got it for us. One of the main courses was not what we had ordered and I
again beckoned over the Irish girl. She said it was the waiters first
night and probably his last.Rather than wait for the right main course I
said that I would have the one that had been brought and she knocked the
wine off the bill to compensate. I told her it was the most memorable
meal we had during our stay and left a tip.
I had a waitress in a very ordinary restaurant in Chicago who when
bringing the bill said that she had taken the liberty of adding her 20%
tip. I told her that I was making a stand and removing it.
