Rick Stein in Puglia

Programme on tonight's tv showed him cooking with the people of Puglia. It
made me think of Giusi's greatly enjoyed trip there and has me planning our
next trip to Italy without reference to the boss! My mouth watered watching
a woman making orecchiette (sp?) by hand and then the cooking of them with
assorted veg., the use of wild asparagus, for example. What a *fabulous*
cuccina! And then he went on to Sicily and Sardinia. I think I need to
live in Italy for a bit. I do love their way of life. ;-)

Yes, it is a splendid kitchen, and the font of vegetable goodness. I went
to a festa yesterday with neighbors, having checked that I would not have to
say the rosary for an hour, at a local shrine and what should I see but a
Puglian family selling goodness from their region. The first Annurca apples
of the year. I love them and the season is very short. They aren't good
keepers because they become ordinary sweet apples, but right now their spicy
goodness comes out of the bowl into my face.

I can buy good orecchitte here, but hardly ever do I find cavatelli. If he
was using asparagus, it must have been taped in spring, when I was there.
Which city was he in?

Not only will I return to Puglia, I can't wait to return to Puglia. It
might feel different to you, because it is a hotbed of British expats, all
in country houses and trulli, who use the cheap flights into Bari and
Brindisi to get back and forth in dizzying frequency. I have been afraid to
ask them why they like living in round rooms!

It was the fish market in Taormina. Any chance of you getting this
programme on your Sky tv - if you have that, of course? Rick Stein's
Mediterranean Escapes. We enjoy his programmes so much. He's relaxed,
genial, enjoying what he's doing and has the gift of talking to the camera
as if to a friend. And his food is so *simple* to produce if you get the
combinations right.

Taormina is in Sicily. One of my favorite paintings is Hungarian
Expressionist of the theater at Taormina, but I've never been there.

I have very few cookbooks, next one to be tackled is one sent me by Judith.
I'm writing one, though. No foams!

I have no satellite nor cable TV, nor broadband to fake it with. I do have
a DVD of Ramsay cooking Sunday lunch, in whìch he is cool and cute.

I've actually applied for another fashion job that would knock a lot of the
cookery right out of my life if I get it. Maybe I'd then lose some weight.

No, No! I have read it through twice. It's just very difficult to find
some of the ingredients, so I must go to Rome first, and this is not when
one does to Rome. Summer in Rome is appalling.

I learned that the hard way. I was there this time last year. Hot as hell,
dirty, expensive beyond belief, and I was sorely disappointed in the food.
Even in some of the classier restaraunts. :-(
Using that experience as a change of venue for this year. Still Italy but
Venice, and a beach hotel in Jesolo.

RS was there last night. IIRC, the house owned/rented by Quaint Irene
was called Taormina. (EFB fame:) Darling Lucia and Miss Mapp. I love
those books but would never join the EFB society. Don't know why. I
just don't think it would appeal to me to be talking to lots of other
EFB fans.

Could be. The programme showed him in both places. I'll try to look it up

That's what I like about his recipes. I was mildly surprised that my
post last week about his Sardinia programme got a few negative comments
about him (not the programme.)

He introduced me to star anise in his TV show- I mean, what more can you
say?! :)
