Post by OpheliaI left sometime ago because this group had died. On a whim I decided to
pop back and see what had happened to the old place, and what do I find?
Great stuff:))
Hi O, and ALL,
I look back very occasionally too. Not for a few months it would appear
because today I was reading October mails about biodegradable plastic bags.
I had a thought to enquire along the lines of whether the degradation had
been only to a stage of powdered polymer or whether there had been any
further degradation. This was in the context of Prof Richard Thompson**'s
work on plastics in the marine environment. I was hoping to give a website
reference but we don't have any broadband today (It's normally slow - as in
0.3mbs download - but today totally non-existent). It could be the rain;
the manhole at the end of our lane which holds the electrical connections
does tend to partly fill with water with any rain - has done for years -
"they" know about it - and I'm sure recent rainfall has not helped matters,
but it means I can't look today so I'll ask you if perhaps you might google
for the Prof and his work. AIUI, in the sea, degradation to powdered
polymer stage means that the smallest lifeforms, diatoms, eat the polymer
particles then get eaten so the polymer enters the food chain that way.
Anyway, good to see the group in action again,
Jane
