Does anyone know if you can still buy these delights? I was in my local
Tesco at the weekend and could see them.

You had to open the freezer door, then the delights you saw would have
become accessible to you.

Asda sell them but they don't taste the same as they did 20 years ago.
Whatever they have done, they have ruined them

Suspect the meat was the cheapest available and not very tasty; probably
raised on a low-budget production line. In the past, the ingredients would
generally have come from an animal raised on enough reasonable quality,
fairly natural food to make it look good enough for a prospective butcher
to buy. Now it probably gets cut up at the killing premises so there is no
need to feed it well enough to make it look saleable. It will be bought on
price and the people with enough expertise who could assess its quality
probably don't get a say in its choice.

Much better to make your own faggots anyway - yummy - just the wrong
season for food like that - though it is a bit chilly today!

If you have seen them in your local Tesco's it probably would be preferable
if you bought them there, that way you can get some.
You might not get them otherwise.

I don't think Waitrose sell them. If they do it would probably have some
fancy French name that you would not recognise anyway - and be 10 times the
price which kind of defeats the object of eating offal.
So they probably do not sell well and would not be very fresh.

So, in conclusion by your own observation Tesco's might have fresh ones,
Waitrose probably don't stock them but if they did they would be stale.

What utter rubbish. A quick check on www.waitrosedeliver.com would have
told you that Waitrose sells 'Mr Brain's 4 faggots in a rich west country
sauce', 378g for £1.34 (Frozen).

I'm sure that Tesco's online website will list something similar (although
possibly lower quality at a higher price), but since they don't let you
browse without registering I'll leave it to someone else to find out.

Or possibly the *same* quality at a *lower* price!

Tesco.com, checked just now:

Mr. Brains 2 Faggots In Rich Sauce 192g £0.73
Mr. Brains 4 Faggots In Rich Sauce 378g £1.00

A wider choice of pack size too!

BTW, for the person who wanted stovies,

Mcintosh Scottish Stovies 340g £1.28

:)

I just found the price check section on Tesco's website. It looks like they
are price matching their faggots against Asda who are also quoting £1.

No 34p for the snob value of having them in a Waitrose plastic bag and
being able to pretend that you have joined the upper middle class
"dinner party" set.

Not really, if you shop at Waitrose you do so far the improved
environment (things like not having to unload shopping at tills,
wide uncluttered isles etc) and a wider range of better things,
but anyobody who shops there just for ready meals (unless its to
get Bighams superior products) is wasting their money.

Wait one minute. This seeker after cultural information wants to know--
does having dinner parties mean: 1) you are pretending to be upper middle
class? 2) you are upper middle class? 3) you care about class and what
class you may be preceived as being part of?
I thought it was being nice to your friends and angling for invitations to
their homes.

It is, some might perceive it as middle class if they are
oversensitive above "class". For most its just as it is
elsewhere. When nobody any longer thinks about asking people
round for food as to do with "class" then we will perhaps have
become a grown up food loving nation.

I forget Italians only eat what is good in season while we eat
corned beef from cans :-)

I freeze special in season things-- like I have abacchio in my freezer and
this week will be freezing tiny red plums. Truffles, however, do not
freeze. The summer truffle is out there, but to an Umbrian, it is hardly a
truffle at all.

For us having people round for dinner means we can't get a babysitter and
dinner with some friends their children and our children is about the only
way we get to socialise!
