Post by grahamPost by Brian ReayPost by grahamPost by Brian ReayWhile in a local bookshop today I noticed a couple of recipe books for
'meals in a mug'. Out of curiosity, I looked at them and the common thread
seems to be the use of a microwave and, of course, a mug. While it doesn't
seem to be my kind of cooking, it would be ideal for perhaps a student, I
am curious just how practical it is.
Has anyone tried cooking meals in a mug?
No but it reminds me of those curries where you used the packet to
measure out the volume of water needed. Those were the (student) days:-)

Were this the Vesta Curries?
I often joke about those, my mother was a very traditional cook, even
yogurt was too foreign for our house until my teen years. She was less than
impressed when my elder brother's girlfriend cooked him a Vesta Curry in
our kitchen.
Yes!! There was a small room with a couple of gas rings and a sink
along the corridor in my hall of residence where we cooked them from
time to time. It wouldn't have been that often because the food that
they served in the dining room was plentiful and excellent.

The halls we lived in at Uni only provided breakfast for married students.
My wife and I still chuckle, nearly 40 years later, at some of the
breakfasts they used to present. Somehow I doubt the other meals were
excellent. Still, we were lucky to find a place as married students.
It seems Vesta curries are making a come back, no pun intended. I wouldn't
have thought the rather 'out of a packet' quality would be so acceptable in
these 'foodie' days. May be they have improved, I've not tried one in over
40 years.
