McD is proposing to build an outlet (I hesitate to call it a restaurant)
in the local shopping centre. There's naturally a protest and a petition
is circulating to stop or severely modify it on the grounds of increase
in traffic. It is being built on the site of a Shell service station!!!!
I decided that I wouldn't sign the petition as I don't feel strongly
about it one way or the other.

Why the objection, it is hardly going to increase traffic hugely at a
shopping centre!

I rather like the occasional Big Mac, other that a Byron Burger (at
something like £10) I've get to find a bought burger which is half as good.

Most of the, so called, 'doubtful' practices that MacDonalds use are
used by all those in the 'fast food' industry, if you want to see
'doubtful', look at some of the small restaurants in any town/city which
are often subject to closure due to problems with hygiene or 'odd' meat
found in freezers. I've yet to see anyone from a sea side 'chippy'
picking up litter etc. but it is common place for a MacDonalds' employee
to be out doing just that in the a High St. etc. They are the only
company I've seen do this.

The food is as wholesome as it can be, given its nature. If you are
eating fries/chips then it is your choice. Ditto anything else they
sell. The odd Big Mac and Fries shouldn't harm anyone, other than those
with perhaps a real medical issue. Ditto the drinks, ice cream, etc.

Compared to Kentucky Fried Chicken, a greasy coating of wet gunk on
boney chicken, give me a Big Mac any time.

Pre-retirement, I used to have a Big Mac every 6 weeks or so (end of
term) I doubt it did me much harm. I plan to continue in retirement.

The Byron burger is very good but not really £10 good.

I'm trying to perfect the Big-Mac sauce/dressing. I almost have it. The
recipe is on the internet but I can't get the colour correct, partly due
to the lack of the correct cucumber relish.

I pretty well agree with everything you've written. Whenever anything is
planned/announced, there are always those who will find some "NIMBY"
type of objection.
In another suburb of this city, there is a large green space that was
set aside for a future school. After some years, a school for disabled
kids has been announced and some locals have gone so far as to sue the
Board of Education because they've become used to walking their dogs on
that plot.

As for McDo, I haven't eaten there for several years since my
grandchildren suddenly decided not to eat there again (I took them there
for a treat). They didn't like the way that kids' deals+toys were being
promoted. We now go to A&W, which IMO makes a better burger.
I have eaten KF chicken on 2 occasions, over 30 years ago, and each time
I suffered really severe indigestion afterwards.
