Most of the grocery shops we use now seem to have stopped selling long
grain rice. The packets now just say "White Rice" which is noticably
inferior to long grain rice. Is there a world shortage?

Basmati *is* a long-grained rice, but is generally cooked differently
from the usual 'American long-grain rice', which is a larger grain, and
boiled to cook, whereas generally, Basmati absorbs moisture/stock etc,
added as it cooks.

There was an export ban on Basmati (and other?) rice from India due to
local shortages, a few months ago. Haven't heard anything since.

Ours is grown in Italy. It used to be pricey, but has grown a lot cheaper this year. We can still gert all the Italian rices, however, since they have specific purposes.

A question I've been thinking about myself.

Sainsburys (my everyday supermarket shop) now sell 'White Rice'. I rang
their Customer Careline to ask why they no longer sold long grain rice
and got a 'boy' on the 'phone who didn't understand a word of what I was
talking about :-( "You could use Sainsburys Thai Jasmine Rice instead"
was one his 'helpful' suggestions.

And then I noticed that Sainsburys Basics rice doesn't say long grain on
the front but it does on back. I now buy that for 40p per kilo.

For me it's horses for courses with rice. Fragrant Basmati for Indian
but never with Chinese. Long grain rice is the perfect rice for Chinese
and Chilli con Carne in my opinion, it sticks together a bit making it
easy to eat with chopsticks. Basmati with chopsticks would be one grain
at a time as well as being too fragrant.

That was the main reason I didn't call Sainsburys myself - I doubt
they'd have even undertood the question. And they've removed the
suggestion box from our store (not that anyone reads those I guess).

I think this is one of the "White Rice" packets I mentioned before.
IIRC the nutritional information and cooking instructions were
different from the long grain rice we used to get there so I don't
think it's the same.
